TRAFFIC SHIFTS NEXT WEEK ON LADYSMITH ROAD NEAR ROUTE 1 IN CAROLINE
Second traffic shift this month for Ladysmith Road widening project is scheduled to occur on Thursday, Aug. 24, near the Route 1 intersection
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Traffic on Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) in Caroline County will be shifted into a temporary alignment near Route 1 on Thursday, Aug. 24, as crews make progress on a road widening project.
It is the second traffic shift this month on the $26.4 million project, which is expanding Ladysmith Road to four travel lanes over nearly a mile between I-95 and just west of the Route 1 intersection. Work is scheduled to be completed in May 2025.
On Thursday, motorists will be guided by barrels, signs and pavement markings as traffic shifts on Ladysmith Road between Center Drive and the work zone limits west of the Route 1 intersection. Minor alignment changes are needed on Route 1 at the Ladysmith Road intersection to facilitate the traffic shift.
As part of the shift, a new right turn lane will open for eastbound Ladysmith Road traffic turning onto Route 1 southbound.
Earlier this month, crews shifted Ladysmith Road traffic between I-95 and Center Drive onto a new, temporary alignment, and activated new traffic signal equipment at the entrance to a Sheetz gas station.
Ladysmith Road will remain two travel lanes, one eastbound and one westbound, in the work zone until construction is complete.
Message boards will be placed to notify motorists of the upcoming traffic shift.
Other project features include the construction of a 10-foot-wide shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists and a 5-foot-wide sidewalk at the Route 1 intersection. Crosswalks and new traffic signal equipment will be installed for pedestrian crossings.
