TRAFFIC TO SHIFT MONDAY ON ROUTE 1 AT SOUTH RIVER IN CAROLINE COUNTY
Reduced traffic in northbound lanes will be shifted to southbound lanes as crews continue construction to rehabilitate bridge

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – On Monday, Aug. 21, northbound and southbound traffic on Route 1 at the South River bridge in Caroline County will be shifted to begin traveling in the southbound lanes.

Route 1 is currently reduced to a single northbound and southbound lane at the South River bridge, with all traffic traveling in the northbound lanes. Construction is underway to repair and improve the condition of the bridge.

On Monday, traffic will be shifted into the southbound lanes in the work zone, and the northbound lanes of Route 1 will be closed for construction. One northbound and southbound lane will remain open. All four lanes of Route 1 will reopen in July 2024, when the $4 million bridge rehabilitation project is expected to be complete.

The bridge is located near Ladysmith Village between Clara Smith Street and Glen Meadows Drive.

Message boards have been placed to alert motorists of the upcoming traffic shift.
