GIVE INPUT ON TWO MILITARY HIGHWAY INTERSECTION PROJECT PIPELINE STUDIES
Take online surveys through Sept. 11; more at vaprojectpipeline.org

CHESAPEAKE  The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking feedback on two transportation studies assessing potential safety and other improvements for two South Military Highway intersections at George Washington Highway and Bainbridge Boulevard in Chesapeake.

The first study will analyze the operational and safety issues identified at the intersection of South Military Highway (Route 13/Route 460) and George Washington Highway (Route 17), with a focus on providing enhanced bicycle and transit access, transportation demand management, safety improvements, and congestion mitigation, and will identify cost-effective preferred alternatives for improvements to address the documented needs.

The second study will analyze the safety and multimodal access issues identified at the intersection of South Military Highway (Route 13/Route 460) and Bainbridge Boulevard (Route 460/Route 166), between the Gilmerton Bridge and Interstate 464 ramps, with a focus on providing enhanced bicycle and transit access, transportation demand management, and safety improvements, and will identify cost-effective preferred alternatives for improvements that address the deficient conditions and prioritize safety for vulnerable users.

VDOT invites residents and travelers to learn more about each of the studies at VAProjectPipeline.org and take both online surveys through Sept. 11. Community input received through the surveys will help the study teams identify existing issues along the study corridors and develop recommendations for potential improvements that will be evaluated and presented during the next phase of the studies, which will include another opportunity for public comments.

Each of the surveys, which have a translation tool for other languages, are available at https://publicinput.com/hr-23-07 and https://publicinput.com/hr-23-08. Comments for both surveys can also be sent to Jerry.Pauley@VDOT.Virginia.gov or to Jerry Pauley, Virginia Department of Transportation, 7511 Burbage Drive, Suffolk, VA, 23435.

These studies are being conducted as part of the Project Pipeline program, which was created by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Project Pipeline is a performance-based planning program to identify cost-effective solutions to multimodal transportation needs in Virginia. Project Pipeline is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), in collaboration with VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

The Commonwealth is partnering with the City of Chesapeake, the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) and Kimley-Horn to develop targeted improvements for both South Military Highway studies that minimize community impacts and address priority needs in a cost-effective way. These studies are expected to be complete in summer 2024. The potential improvements established during the studies are only preliminary and are not scheduled or funded as a construction project at this time. The final plans will provide a multimodal investment strategy that can be used by the study partners to seek and secure funding through programs including SMART SCALE, revenue sharing, interstate funding, and others.
