I-64 EAST OFF-RAMP TO RIP RAP ROAD SCHEDULED TO CLOSE OVERNIGHT SEPT. 12-13
Detour in place as Hampton Roads Express Lanes Hampton segment construction continues

HAMPTON – Starting as early as Tuesday, Sept. 12 and Wednesday, Sept. 13, the I-64 east off-ramp to Rip Rap Road (exit 265C) is scheduled to close temporarily each night from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. while crews set concrete barrier and re-stripe the ramp as part of construction for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment

A signed detour route will be in place to direct motorists.

Additional ramp closures are expected in the coming weeks and will be announced as the work is scheduled.

The I-64 west traffic shift at the Hampton River bridge implemented earlier this month is estimated to remain in place through as early as summer 2024. The continuous, single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and west of Lasalle Avenue (exit 265) are estimated to be in place into 2026.

Visit the project site to learn more about construction updates, traffic impacts and to sign-up to receive project updates: https://64expresslanes.org/under_construction/hampton.asp

Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible and are reminded to use caution when traveling through work zones and to obey posted speed limits, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free.

The HREL Hampton Segment will ultimately become a part of the overall HREL network, a continuous, 46-mile network of Express Lanes in each traffic direction on I-64, from east of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-64/I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake. The HREL network is designed to transport more motorists through the region while helping to alleviate congestion and allowing motorists more travel options.

Motorists should plan their drive with VDOT’s free traffic information tools:

  • Download the 511Virgina app.
  • Visit the 511Virginia website or dial 511 for traffic information on your phone.
