NORFOLK – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold two simultaneous in-person public hearings on Wednesday, Oct. 4, to share information and receive feedback on the proposed design plans for two new intersection projects, referred to as the Western Intersection and the Eastern Intersection, at the Intermodal Connector in Norfolk. Both intersection projects are designed to support Naval operations, facility access and emergency readiness, while also enhancing access to the Virginia Port Authority’s Northern Gate and reducing traffic volumes on adjacent city roads.

The proposed plans for the Western Intersection include construction of a new intersection on the western side of the Intermodal Connector, in the vicinity of the exit ramp to Seabee Road and Hampton Boulevard. Additionally, this project will expand the existing one-directional ramp between the Intermodal Connector and Seabee Road to accommodate two-way traffic. Once complete, the project is designed to enhance access to Naval Station Norfolk’s Pass Office, the commercial vehicle inspection station, and base entrance Gates 5 and 6.

The proposed plans for the Eastern Intersection include construction of a new intersection on the eastern side of the Intermodal Connector, located approximately 0.2 miles west of I-564. The plans for the new intersection are designed to directly connect the Naval Station’s residences and facilities in the Camp Allen area to the Intermodal Connector for improved access to I-564 and Hampton Boulevard. The proposed plans also include the construction of a bridge spanning the railway and the eastbound lanes of the Intermodal Connector.

The purpose of the joint meeting is to give the public an opportunity to review both projects’ exhibits on display, meet with VDOT representatives, and provide input. The event will be an open-house format meeting with no formal presentation given. Media are invited to attend.

In the event of inclement weather on Oct. 4, the event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the same time and location above.
