NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH – Beginning as early as June 2, contractor crews performing utility work for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will temporarily close a portion of eastbound Greenwich Road at the intersection with Newtown Road.
During the closure, scheduled for 11 p.m. on June 2 through 9 a.m. on June 3, signed detours will be in place:
- Motorists traveling on northbound Newtown Road will take Virginia Beach Boulevard, Witchduck Road and Cleveland Street to access Greenwich Road.
- Motorists traveling on southbound Newtown Road will take Kempsville Road, Center Drive, Newtown Road, Virginia Beach Boulevard, Witchduck Road and Cleveland Street to access Greenwich Road.
While the work is underway:
- Westbound Greenwich Road in this location is scheduled to remain open.
- The two left turn lanes from southbound Newtown Road to Greenwich Road, as well as the right turn lane from northbound Newtown Road will also be closed.
- All traffic exiting I-264 east at Newtown Road (exit 15A) will be detoured to southbound Newtown Road.
- The on-ramp from eastbound Greenwich Road to I-264 east at the roundabout will be closed, with traffic routed, via the signed detour, to Witchduck Road or westbound Greenwich Road.
A single-lane closure on eastbound Greenwich Road at the intersection with Newtown Road may be in place on June 3 as the utility work concludes. In the event of inclement weather or other schedule delays, a contingency date for the full closure of eastbound Greenwich Road is scheduled for the night of June 3.
This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.
