PORTION OF ROUTE 633 IN SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY TO CLOSE FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
Road closure and signed detours scheduled to start as early as Aug. 21
SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY– Beginning as early as Aug. 21, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will close a portion of Route 633 (St. Lukes Road) to replace a bridge over Horse Pen Swamp, near Berlin in Southampton County. The project will include installing a new timber bridge deck and steel beams.
Route 633 (St. Lukes Road) will be closed to through traffic from Route 710 (Roundhill Road) to Route 626 (Berlin Dory Road), with signed detours in place. Motorists heading east on Route 710 (Roundhill Road) will detour around the road closure by continuing east on Route 710 (Roundhill Road) and turning left on Route 616 (Ivor Road), left onto Route 626 (Berlin Dorey Road) and travel back to Route 633 (St. Lukes Road). Motorists heading east on Route 626 (Berlin Dorey Road) at the closure should reverse the detour.
Access to private property within this corridor will be maintained at all times.
The work is anticipated to be completed this fall. All construction is dependent upon weather conditions, and the schedule is subject to change.
As work begins on this project, practice safe and smart driving by avoiding distractions and obeying the speed limits. Additionally, it is always best practice to secure any items that may become dislodged while enroute and impact traffic.
Motorists should plan their drive with VDOT’s free traffic information tools:
- Download the 511Virgina app.
- Visit the 511Virginia website or dial 511 for traffic information on your phone.
