ROUTE 258 (SMITHS FERRY ROAD) TO BE REDUCED TO SINGLE LANE DURING BRIDGE REPAIR WORK
Alternating one-way traffic to begin as early as June 5

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTYAs early as June 5, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin work on the Route 258 (Smiths Ferry Road) bridge over the Nottoway River in Southampton County. The work will require a consecutive lane closure reducing Route 258 to one lane, north of Route 686 (Riverdale Drive) and approximately 2 miles from the North Carolina state line.

The lane closure will allow crews to safely repair the concrete bridge railing. Crews will install a temporary traffic signal to alternate traffic in each direction on Route 258 at the bridge while the work is completed. During some construction activities, traffic in this location may be under flagger control.

The closure is estimated to be in place up to four weeks. All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions, and the schedule is subject to change.

Before heading out on the road, motorists are advised to plan their commute by using VDOT’s free traffic information tools:

  • Download the 511 smartphone app, or 511-integrated Waze app.
  • Visit the 511 Virginia website or dial 511 for traffic information on your phone.
  • Follow @511HamptonRoads and @VaDOTHR on Twitter.
