ROUTE 743 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT OVER TARRARA CREEK COMPLETED IN SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY
Route 743 open to traffic, detour lifted
SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY – As of today, a portion of Route 743 (Burnt Reed Road) near Boykins in Southampton County, is open to traffic following the early completion of a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) project to replace the bridge over Tarrara Creek.
The work on Route 743 near the intersection of Route 743 (Burnt Reed Road) and Route 716 (Odom Chapel Road) included replacing the previous multi-span, steel-beam, wood-deck bridge. The new single-span, box-beam bridge includes expanded 11-foot travel lanes.
The project, originally scheduled for completion this fall, finished months ahead of schedule and under budget. VDOT awarded the $1.29 million bridge replacement project contract to Crofton Construction Services, Inc. in late 2022, with construction beginning in February 2023.
