VDOT TO IMPLEMENT SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT SUSSEX COUNTY INTERSECTION
New traffic configurations coming to Route 40 (Sussex Drive) at Route 35 (Jerusalem Plank Road)

SUSSEX COUNTY The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in conjunction with Sussex County, will soon begin work to enhance safety at a local intersection near Waverly.

Based on the findings of roadway safety analyses conducted with Sussex County, VDOT will implement a new traffic configuration at the intersection of Route 40 (Sussex Drive) and Route 35 (Jerusalem Plank Road) starting as early as Nov. 1, weather permitting.

To improve motorists’ safety, modifications will be made to reconfigure the traffic flow through the intersection, prompting all vehicles to come to a stop at each approach before entering the intersection. Benefits of implementing an all-way stop include a significant reduction in fatal and serious injury crashes with minimal increase in travel time.

On Route 35, crews will install new pavement markings, advanced warning signage and rumble strips, approaching the intersection in both directions along with new stop signs. On Route 40, crews will install additional warning signage, pavement markings and new rumble strips in both directions in advance of the existing stop signs.

In order to complete this work, crews will be implementing alternating, single-lane closures on both Route 40 and Route 35 in the vicinity of the intersection from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, starting as early as Nov. 1 through Nov. 6.

All work is weather-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.
