AVOID TRAVEL IF POSSIBLE TODAY

LYNCHBURG – A mixed bag of precipitation continues to fall across the Lynchburg District. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain made, and are still making, an appearance leaving many roadways icy. Motorists are urged to avoid any unnecessary travel today and, perhaps, into the early hours of Monday.

As of 4 am, the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) was reporting snow on major roadways in the counties of Amherst, Buckingham, and Nelson, while icy patches were reported in the counties of Appomattox, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland with the exception of VA 45 which was snow covered, Halifax, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward, as well as on major roads handled by VDOT in the City of Lynchburg. Snow or ice were also reported on most secondary routes, bridges and ramps.

Crews have worked in 12-hour shifts to clear primary and major secondary routes across the ten-county district which includes the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward. Once those roads are passable efforts will move to secondary routes and neighborhood streets.

If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists are encouraged to plan accordingly. Know the conditions – visit 511Virginia.org, the 511 app or call 511 for updated road conditions 24 hours per day. Drive for the conditions – reduce speed, stop/start/steer slowly. Have increased care on bridges, overpasses, low lying areas near water or shaded areas which may freeze first. If you do encounter VDOT equipment or other emergency responders displaying amber, red or blue lights, please remember to move over.

Additional information about winter weather preparations and response can be found at www.virginiadot.org/travel/snow.asp. Local updates are posted to Twitter.com/VaDOTLynchburg.
