Bridge Demolition and Lane Closures for Transform 66 Project Next Week
Demolition of Route 123 Ramp Over I-66 Continues and Begins on I-66 Over Fairfax County Parkway

FAIRFAX – Continued demolition of the ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) South over I-66 and partial demolition of the I-66 bridges over Route 286 will require overnight lane closures on eastbound I-66 and on northbound Route 286 next week. Closures are required to safely conduct work over the roadway. Construction of the re-built Waples Mill Road bridge over I-66 will begin next week.
 
Construction Progress During Week of Feb. 2:
  • Partial demolition of the Waples Mill Road bridge over I-66 began on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and is nearly complete.
  • Demolition of the ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 South over I-66 began on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Demolition of the two of four spans of the bridge is almost complete. 
What's Ahead This Weekend and Week of Feb. 9: 
At Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road)
  • On Friday night, Feb. 7, and Saturday night, Feb. 8, crews will continue nighttime demolition of the Route 123 South bridge span over I-66 West.
  • On Sunday, Feb. 9, no demolition is planned while crews place concrete barrier within the interchange.
  • Nighttime demolition will resume Monday, Feb. 10, shifting to the bridge span over I-66 East. Demolition will continue during overnight hours through the week with removal of the concrete bridge deck for each span, followed by removal of the bridge girders. 
  • Nighttime ramp demolition over I-66 is anticipated to be complete around mid-February.
  • The ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 South is being demolished to allow construction of new ramps for the redesigned I-66/Route 123 Interchange, to include Express Lanes access to and from the east and west. 
At Waples Mill Road
  • The first phase of demolition of the Waples Mill Road bridge is anticipated to be complete this weekend (Friday night, Feb. 7)
  • Construction is planned to begin on the northern abutment of the new Waples Mill Road bridge during daytime hours.
  • The Waples Mill Road bridge over I-66 is being rebuilt to provide room for Express Lanes and future mass transit as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. This work is being done in phases in order to maintain traffic on Waples Mill Road throughout demolition and reconstruction.
At Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286)
  • Partial demolition of the I-66 bridges over Fairfax County Parkway is scheduled to begin Thursday, Feb. 13, during overnight hours.
  • Demolition is anticipated to last approximately six weeks.
  • The I-66 bridges over Route 286 are being widened to provide room for Express Lanes and future mass transit as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
What Drivers Should Expect:
I-66 East from Monument Drive to Route 123
Friday, Feb. 7, and Saturday, Feb. 8
  • A single lane will close at 9 p.m.
  • Three lanes will close by 11 p.m. for overhead bridge demolition at Waples Mill Road and the Route 123 ramp.
  • Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • All lanes will open by 9 a.m.
I-66 West from Nutley Street to Route 123
Friday, Feb. 7, and Saturday Feb. 8
  • A single lane will close at 9 p.m.
  • Three lanes will close by 11 p.m. for overhead bridge demolition at the Route 123 ramp.
  • Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • All lanes will open by 9 a.m.
I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Route 123
Monday, Feb. 10
  • A single lane will close at 9 p.m.
  • Three lanes will close by 11 p.m. for overhead bridge demolition at Route 123.
  • Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m.
  • All lanes will open by 5 a.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 11, through Thursday, Feb. 13
  • A single lane will close at 9 p.m.
  • By 11 p.m. all traffic will be diverted to the collector-distributor lane on the right for overhead bridge demolition at the Route 123 ramp.
  • Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m.
  • All lanes will open by 5 a.m.
I-66 East Collector-Distributor Lane at Route 123 and the Ramps from I-66 East to Route 123 North and South
Friday, Feb. 14, and Saturday, Feb. 15
  • The collector-distributor lane on eastbound I-66 to exit to northbound and southbound Route 123 will be closed for overhead bridge demolition at Route 123 between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • The ramps from I-66 East to Route 123 North and South and the collector-distributor lane will be closed for overhead bridge demolition at Route 123. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 243 (Nutley Street) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 123 North or South. Additionally, the right lane of I-66 East at Route 123 will be closed. 

Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) North from Route 29 (Lee Highway) to I-66
Thursday, Feb. 13
  • A single lane will close at 9 p.m.
  • Two lanes will close by 10 p.m.
  • Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m.
  • All lanes will open by 5 a.m.
Friday, Feb. 14
  • A single lane will close at 10 p.m.
  • Two lanes will close by 11 p.m.
  • Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 6 a.m.
  • All lanes will open by 8 a.m.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
