King Street over I-395 Bridge Rehabilitation in Alexandria Underway
Project scheduled for summer 2021 completion
ALEXANDRIA – Work is underway to rehabilitate the King Street (Route 7) bridge over I-395 to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians and extend the overall life of the bridge, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Improvements include:
- Repairing and resurfacing the concrete bridge deck
- Repairing bridge piers, abutments and bearings
- Adding pedestrian fences to the bridge railings
- Painting steel bridge beams
- Repairing King Street pavement adjacent to the bridges
The project also includes the following pedestrian improvements:
- Adding a new westbound King Street pedestrian crossing at 30th Street South
- Widening the King Street median sidewalk between 30th Street South and Menokin Drive, and centering the sidewalk in the median
- Widening the westbound King Street sidewalk between 30th Street South and Park Center Drive
- Upgrading the curb ramps and pedestrian signals at King Street and Park Center Drive, and eastbound King Street and Menokin Drive
- Upgrading roadway lighting
During construction, lane closures on King Street are allowed according to the following weekly schedule:
- Monday through Thursday: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Monday night through Thursday night: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Friday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Friday night: 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.
- Saturday night: 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
- Sunday night: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Some day and overnight lane closures along the I-395 general purpose lanes, as well as overnight lane closures along the 395 Express Lanes, may also be scheduled at the King Street overpass.
The $13 million project is financed with federal and state funding, including State of Good Repair funding used for maintenance of structures and bridges. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2021.
