King Street Traffic Shift at I-395 in Alexandria May 23
I-395 northbound ramp to westbound King Street also to close for about three weeks for bridge deck replacement

ALEXANDRIA – Drivers along King Street (Route 7) in Alexandria can expect a new temporary traffic pattern at I-395 beginning Sunday morning, May 23, weather permitting, for work as part of the rehabilitation of the King Street Bridge over I-395, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Drivers can expect lane closures in both directions of King Street over I-395 Saturday, May 22 from 10 p.m. through 7 a.m. Sunday, May 23 so crews can install temporary striping for the traffic shift. Around 7 a.m. Sunday, the westbound lanes of the bridge will close and westbound traffic will be shifted so that one lane of traffic in each direction will run on the eastbound King Street side of the bridge while the bridge deck on the westbound side is replaced.

To improve traffic flow, the following detour for westbound King Street traffic will also be signed: Menokin Drive, North Van Dorn Street, West Braddock Road, and North Beauregard Street back to King Street.

Additionally, beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday, the ramp from northbound I-395 to westbound King Street will also be closed until work on the westbound side of the bridge is complete in mid-June. Traffic will be detoured via the following routes:

  • Seminary Road (Northbound I-395 Exit 4) and North Beauregard Street back to King Street.
  • Northbound I-395 ramp to eastbound King Street, Menokin Drive, North Van Dorn Street, West Braddock Road and North Beauregard Street back to westbound King Street

Currently, one lane of traffic in each direction has been running on the westbound King Street side of the bridge over I-395 since May 3 to complete the replacement of the deck on the eastbound side of the bridge. The ramp from southbound I-395 to eastbound King Street has also been closed since May 3, and will reopen to traffic at 7 a.m. Sunday.

The $13 million rehabilitation of King Street over I-395 includes upgrading the King Street overpass, as well as pedestrian improvements along King Street between Park Center Drive and Menokin Drive. The project is financed with federal and state funding, including State of Good Repair funding used for bridges. The project is expected to be complete this summer. Read more.

Within the project limits, King Street averages up to 43,000 vehicles a day and I-395 averages up to 208,000.
