Loop Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South in Centreville Reopening to Traffic on or about Friday, August 27

FAIRFAX – The loop ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South in Centreville will reopen on or about Friday morning, August 27. The ramp has been closed while it was reconfigured to connect with the realigned I-66 and Route 28 as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Following the reopening of the ramp, the Braddock Road/Walney Road Bridge will open to vehicles headed east from Braddock Road to Walney Road. This is anticipated to occur during the week of August 30. This new traffic movement has been unavailable due to the detour required for the I-66 West to Route 28 South ramp closure.

The following closures are planned during the overnight hours Thursday, August 26, as part of the ramp reopening.

  • Two lanes approaching Route 28 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Route 28 South at I-66

  • One lane approaching I-66 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

    • Drivers traveling to Braddock Road/Walney Road will continue north and follow signs to Route 28 North, stay to the left on Route 28, and follow signs to the left exit to Braddock Road/Walney Road.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled to Friday night, August 27, (with the ramp reopening on Saturday morning, August 28) if inclement conditions occur.

Drivers should use caution and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs when traveling in this area.

The new Route 28 and I-66 Interchange will improve traffic flow on I-66 and Route 28, and provide access to and from the future I-66 Express Lanes. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes, which span from I-495 to Route 29 in Gainesville, are expected to open in December 2022.
