New Loop Ramp from Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North to I-66 West Opening on or about Tuesday Night, November 2

FAIRFAX – A new loop ramp from Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North to I-66 West is planned to open on or about Tuesday night, November 2. The temporary left-turn and connector ramp from Route 123 North to I-66 West will close and the ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West will be modified as part of the work. The Route 123 interchange is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers should expect the following new traffic pattern, weather permitting:

Tuesday night, November 2
Ramp from Route 123 North to I-66 West

  • During the overnight hours the new, permanent loop ramp will open on the right side of the roadway near the previous loop ramp’s location.
  • Drivers on Route 123 North will no longer be able to make a left turn at the temporary traffic signal to reach I-66 West.

To implement this ramp opening, drivers should expect the following during the overnight hours of Tuesday, November 2:

Route 123 North and South between White Granite Drive and I-66

  • One lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for crews to implement a traffic shift.
  • All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

I-66 West at Route 123

  • Two lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from Route 123 North to I-66 West

  • The left turn at the temporary traffic signal to reach the ramp will be closed at 10 p.m.
  • Between 10 p.m. and midnight, traffic will be detoured farther north, stay to the left and use the left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at White Granite Drive/Rose Forest Drive onto Route 123 South, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
  • After midnight, the new loop ramp from Route 123 North to I-66 West will be opened on the right side of the roadway near the location of the previous loop ramp.

Ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West

  • Around midnight, the ramp will be closed.
  • Traffic will be detoured farther south, stay to the left, make a U-turn from the left-most turn lane at the traffic signal at the ramp to I-66 East onto Route 123 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
  • The ramp will reopen by 4 a.m.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

When complete, the reconstructed Route 123/I-66 Interchange will provide direct access to and from the new Express Lanes for both eastbound and westbound travelers. A new shared-use path through the interchange will provide connection between the new I-66 corridor trail and planned trails in the City of Fairfax.
