Overnight Full Closures of Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) at I-66 Planned May 18-22 for Overhead Bridge Beam Installation
Multiple ramps at the I-66/Route 286 Interchange will be closed nightly
FAIRFAX – Overnight full closures of Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) are planned Tuesday, May 18, through Saturday, May 22, to allow crews to install overhead bridge beams. Full closures are planned on northbound Route 286 on Tuesday and Saturday nights, and on southbound on Wednesday through Friday nights. The I-66 bridges over Route 286 are being widened as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Multiple ramps between I-66 and Route 286 will be closed nightly. Detours will be posted.
Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area while this work takes place and should consider using alternate routes.
Details include:
Tuesday, May 18
Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North at I-66
- Around 9 p.m. northbound Route 286 approaching I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane.
- Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. all lanes will be closed.
- All northbound traffic will be directed to exit to I-66 East, travel about two miles to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
- All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 286 North
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
Ramp from Route 286 North to I-66 West
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, travel about two miles to Route 50 West, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
Route 286 South at I-66
- Southbound Route 286 will be reduced to a single travel lane from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.
Wednesday, May 19, and Thursday, May 20
Route 286 South at I-66
- Around 9 p.m. each night, southbound Route 286 approaching I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane.
- Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. nightly, all lanes will be closed.
- All southbound traffic will be directed to exit to I-66 West, travel about two miles to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
- All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.
Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 East
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
- Traffic will be detoured to I-66 West, travel about two miles to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 286 South
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
- Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
Friday, May 21
Route 286 South at I-66
- Around 9 p.m. southbound Route 286 approaching I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane.
- Between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. all lanes will be closed.
- All southbound traffic will be directed to exit to I-66 West, travel about two miles to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
- All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 286 North
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured to Route 286 South, continue to the exit to Route 29 North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 North, then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to Route 286 North.
Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 East
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured to I-66 West, travel about two miles to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right to Route 28 North, then stay to the right to I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 286 South
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right to Route 28 North, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
Route 286 North at I-66
- Northbound Route 286 will be reduced to a single travel lane from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.
Saturday, May 22
Route 286 North at I-66
- Around 9 p.m. northbound Route 286 approaching I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane.
- Between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. all lanes will be closed.
- All northbound traffic will be directed to exit to I-66 East, travel about two miles to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
- All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.
Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 East
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Traffic will be directed to continue farther south to Route 29 North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 29 North, then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to Route 286 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 286 North
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
Ramp from Route 286 North to I-66 West
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, travel about two miles to Route 50 West, then stay to the right to I-66 West.
Route 286 South at I-66
- Southbound Route 286 will be reduced to a single travel lane from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
