I-66 West lane split scheduled to begin morning of September 21, followed by I-66 East lane split on morning of September 22
UPDATE (9/20/2022): The traffic shifts have been rescheduled to begin during the early morning hours Thursday, September 22, and Friday, September 23.
FAIRFAX – The travel lanes on I-66 West and East between Route 50 and Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) will be shifted into a new configuration during the early morning hours Wednesday, September 21, and Thursday, September 22. These temporary lane configurations are part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Traffic is being shifted as construction activities advance building the future 66 Express Lanes in the center portion of the roadway.
Beginning during the early morning hours on or about Wednesday, September 21, the two right travel lanes on I-66 West between Route 50 and Route 286 will be separated from the two left travel lanes by a barrier-enclosed construction zone. Drivers will be directed by signs and message boards to stay to the right at the lane split to exit to Route 286, and to stay to the left to exit to Monument Drive and Stringfellow Road. Through-traffic can use either side of the lane split. This traffic pattern will remain in place for approximately two weeks.
Following the westbound traffic shift, the eastbound lanes will be divided during the early morning hours on or about Thursday, September 22. The two right travel lanes between Route 286 and Route 50 will be separated from the two left travel lanes by a barrier-enclosed construction zone. Drivers will be directed by signs and message boards to stay to the right at the lane split to exit to Route 50. Through-traffic can use either side of the lane split. This traffic pattern will remain in place for approximately two weeks.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled to the following night if inclement conditions occur.
Drivers should always use caution and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs in construction zones.
