I-66 West Travel Lanes at Nutley Street to Shift to New Roadway Configuration on or about July 6
The two right lanes will be temporarily separated from the two left lanes while construction continues; Drivers will stay to the right to exit to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metrorail Station

FAIRFAX – Travel lanes on I-66 West between Nutley Street and Vaden Drive will be shifted to a new, long-term configuration beginning during the early morning hours on or about Wednesday, July 6. When this traffic change is implemented, the two right travel lanes will be separated from the two left travel lanes by barrier. Drivers will be directed by signs and message boards to stay to the right at the lane split to exit to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metrorail Station (Country Creek Road and Virginia Center Boulevard). This temporary traffic pattern will remain in place for approximately two months, and is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

The ramps from Virginia Center Boulevard to I-66 West and from I-66 West to Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metrorail Station will reopen during the early morning hours on or about Wednesday, July 6, as part of the implementation of this traffic shift. These ramps have been temporarily closed to allow construction to advance. Additionally, the future Express Lanes ramp from Vaden Drive to I-66 West that was temporarily opened as a detour route for buses only will be closed when this shift is implemented.

To implement this traffic pattern change, drivers should expect the following:

Tuesday, July 5
I-66 West from Cedar Lane to Vaden Drive

  • Three lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North and South

  • The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to the exit to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 123 South, stay to the right to the ramp to I-66 East, then exit to Nutley Street North or South.

Ramp from Nutley Street North and South to I-66 West

  • The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Southbound Nutley Street traffic will be directed to turn right on Virginia Center Boulevard (prior to the closure), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to Vaden Drive, then follow signs to I-66 West. Northbound Nutley Street traffic will be directed to continue farther north, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to Virginia Center Boulevard, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to Vaden Drive, then follow signs to I-66 West.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled to the following night if inclement conditions occur.

Traffic is being shifted to the outer portion of the roadway in order to build the future I-66 Express Lanes in the center portion of the interstate.

Drivers should always use caution and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs in construction zones.
