Piggott Bottom Road Bridge Replacement Underway in Hamilton
Project scheduled for completion this fall
HAMILTON – Work is underway to replace the Piggott Bottom Road (Route 711) bridge over Branch of Catoctin Creek) to improve long-term safety and operations, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The original bridge was built in 1932 and rehabilitated in 1992, with several repairs made since.
In March, the bridge was closed to traffic due to safety inspection results. Drivers are asked to continue following the posted detour along Route 287 (Berlin Turnpike), Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) and Hamilton Station Road (Route 704).
The new bridge will be slightly longer and higher to better withstand flooding, and will include precast concrete beams to reduce long-term maintenance.
The bridge averages 140 vehicles a day based on 2019 data, projected to increase to 440 vehicles a day by 2035.
The $2.3 million project is financed with federal and state funding, including State of Good Repair funds used for bridges, and is scheduled for completion this fall.
