Bridge beam work for Duke Street over I-395 project

ALEXANDRIA – Drivers can expect lane closures on the I-395 general purpose lanes and 395 Express Lanes at Duke Street (Route 236, Exit 3) Sunday night, May 21 and Monday night, May 22 for bridge beam work as part of the Duke Street over I-395 Bridge Rehabilitation project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The lane closures will occur according to the following schedule, weather permitting:

  • Sunday night, May 21: The two left lanes of the northbound I-395 general purpose lanes approaching Duke Street will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.; the northbound I-395 general purpose lanes will have three full stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes each occurring between midnight and 4 a.m. The two right lanes of the northbound 395 Express Lanes approaching Duke Street will be closed between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.; the far left lane will remain open. The backup date is Monday night, May 22 in case inclement weather occurs.
  • Monday night, May 22: The two left lanes of the southbound I-395 general purpose lanes approaching Duke Street will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.; the southbound I-395 general purpose lanes will have three full stoppages of up to 20 minutes each occurring between midnight and 4 a.m. The two right lanes of the southbound 395 Express Lanes approaching Duke Street will be closed from 11 p.m. to midnight while the far left lane will remain open (the entirety of the 395 Express Lanes will be closed from midnight to 2 a.m. for reversal to the northbound direction, with all northbound lanes open after 2 a.m.). The backup date is Tuesday night, May 23 in case inclement weather occurs.

Drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes. All Duke Street interchange ramps will remain open.

The work is part of the project to rehabilitate the Duke Street bridge over I-395. The improvements will extend the overall life of the bridge and improve safety for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians, and include replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams, upgrading the westbound sidewalk to a shared-use path, and widening the eastbound sidewalk. The project is scheduled for completion this winter.

Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
