Overnight Joint Repair Work and Lane Closures on I-495 South Starting Tonight, March 6
Drivers should expect overnight multi-lane closures; Work and closures to continue through spring
FAIRFAX, VA – Starting tonight, March 6, and continuing during nighttime hours this spring as weather conditions allow, crews will perform joint repair work on southbound I-495, beginning in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge and progressing south on the approximately 2.5-mile I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. This work will require triple lane closures on southbound I-495 with at least one lane remaining open to traffic at all times. Most of this work and related-overnight closures will occur on weeknights, though some will occur during weekend overnights.
Repairs will require crews to saw-cut each side of the joint and excavate the overlaid asphalt to access the joints. Repairs will be made to the joints and new asphalt will be placed to match the elevation of the highway. Asphalt cannot be installed during cold temperatures, so paving work will not occur during episodes of cold weather. After repairs are completed on southbound I-495, work will begin on northbound I- 495. Joint repair work is necessary to prepare for construction of the future, widened Beltway.
This work is part of the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project to extend the existing 495 Express Lanes from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway near the American Legion Bridge.
Visit 495NEXT.org for the latest construction and lane closure information.
