Stringfellow Road/Clifton Road Extended Turn Lanes to Route 29 Open in Fairfax
Part of Route 29 Widening Project
FAIRFAX – Drivers on Clifton Road and Stringfellow Road (Route 645) now have longer left-turn lanes to Route 29, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The southbound Stringfellow Road left-turn lane to northbound Route 29 was extended by about 600 feet, while the northbound Clifton Road left-turn lane to southbound Route 29 was extended by about 165 feet as part of the Route 29 Widening Project, which is making improvements along Route 29 between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive to improve safety, traffic flow and bicyclist and pedestrian accessibility and connectivity.
Construction activities will continue throughout the project area, and lane closures will be in place during off-peak hours as crews relocate utilities, install stormwater management infrastructure, and build the additional improvements along Route 29 which include:
- Reconstructing and widening 1.5 miles of roadway from four lanes to six
- Correcting vertical alignment to improve sight distance
- Providing connectivity to pedestrian/bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange
The entire project is scheduled for completion in spring 2026.
Within the project limits, Route 29 averages 30,000 vehicles a day.
The $97 million project is financed with federal, state (including Smart Scale) and Fairfax County funding and by part of the concession fee provided under the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project Comprehensive Agreement.
