Triple Lane Closures on I-495 During Overnight Hours Starting on or About Sun., April 23, Continuing For Three Additional Overnights
Closures Necessary to Implement Traffic Shift
FAIRFAX, VA –Starting on or about Sunday night, April 23, three lanes of northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) between Lewinsville Road and the George Washington Memorial Parkway will be closed, with one northbound lane remaining open. This triple-lane closure on northbound I-495 is scheduled for two nights (April 23 and 24). Crews will then implement triple-lane closures on southbound I-495 in the same area for the next two nights (April 25 and 26), with one southbound lane remaining open.
Next week’s nightly lane closures will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m., with all lanes reopening by 5 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the closures and associated work will be postponed to the following overnight.
These closures are necessary for crews to shift all four lanes of traffic in each direction to the inside portion of the Beltway, so that crews can build new lanes on the outer sides of the Beltway, making room for the future express lanes. Crews will need to eradicate existing lane markings and restripe the lanes before implementing this traffic shift.
Drivers are strongly urged to reduce speed and exercise caution when approaching and traveling through the 495 NEXT work zone. Travelers also should anticipate additional delays during the upcoming nighttime work.
This work is part of the 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project to extend the existing 495 Express Lanes from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway near the American Legion Bridge.
