NEW PEDESTRIAN ACCOMMODATIONS IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY AT E. PARHAM ROAD AND BROOK ROAD IN HENRICO
Newly completed improvements include accessible pedestrian signals at crosswalks

SOUTH CHESTERFIELD —The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently completed a pedestrian accommodations project to enhance safety and accessibility at the intersection of E. Parham Road (Route 73) and Brook Road (Route 1) in Henrico County. The intersection improvements include new curb ramps with detectable warning surfaces and pavement markings on the west leg of the intersection. Traffic signal head replacements, high visibility signal back plates, pedestrian signal heads and accessible pedestrian signal (APS) devices were also installed as part of the intersection upgrade.

The APS devices enhance communication with audible direction to pedestrians that are blind or visually impaired. The device emanates a “locate tone” so that pedestrians can be guided to the push button by the sound. The APS also provides the pedestrian with audible “wait” and “cross” commands when activated. VDOT’s Richmond District Project Delivery Engineer, Ron Hobson, P.E. stated that “the upgrade is well positioned to benefit residents and visitors of St. Joseph’s Villa.”

Work began on the project in September 2020 and was completed in December. The construction costs of the project were approximately $80,000.

Anyone with questions about the project can call (800) 367-7623 or visit https://my.vdot.virginia.gov/.
