BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT COMPLETE ON PATRICK HENRY HIGHWAY (ROUTE 360) IN AMELIA COUNTY
Project adds enhanced visibility and safety

SOUTH CHESTERFIELD, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently completed a project to replace the eastbound and westbound bridges of Patrick Henry Highway (Route 360) over Route 360 Business (Goodes Bridge Road) and the Norfolk Southern Railway in Amelia County.

The new bridges replaced the former four-span twin bridges with two-span bridges, along with clearance for an additional railroad track and access road. The new two 12-foot wide lanes with 4-foot wide shoulders give drivers a 32-foot wide clear roadway width for enhanced visibility and safety.

The purpose of the $11.4 million State of Good Repair project was to replace the existing, deficient bridges as well as increase clearance under the bridges and improve visibility and safety.

“The previous bridges were originally constructed in 1966,” said Robert Poutier, P.E., Richmond District Construction Engineer. “They certainly stood the test of time. The new bridges were built to last for decades more to come, while also enhancing driver safety.”

Construction began October 2020, and the new bridges were built one at a time, with all traffic temporarily shifting to one bridge, while the other was demolished and rebuilt. Each bridge was scheduled to take about one year to build for a total construction time of two years. The project was completed on time and under budget.
