NEW KENT, Va. – An in-person public hearing is scheduled on Dec. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the New Kent Visitors Center at 7324 Vineyards Parkway regarding a plan to widen a portion of I-64 from mile marker 205 in Bottoms Bridge to mile marker 215, slightly more than a mile from Courthouse Road (Exit 214) in New Kent County.

The 10-mile portion in New Kent is part of a 29-mile-long project, starting at Bottoms Bridge just east of I-295, to the Lightfoot exit (mile marker 234) in the Williamsburg area. This portion – known as the GAP – is the last section of I-64 that remains four lanes.

The project adds a 12-foot travel lane in both directions and 10-foot paved shoulders on both the inside and outside lanes. The median is being used for the additional lanes and shoulders. VDOT estimates the full project will cost approximately $750 million.

Along with widening this last section, the entire 29-mile project includes multiple bridges being widened and rehabilitated on I-64, new overhead signs, new cameras to help with incident alerts, sound barrier walls, culvert and pipe repairs, and new storm drainage culverts and pipes.
