PREPARE FOR TRAFFIC IMPACTS AT E. BROAD STREET AND I-95 IN RICHMOND AS BRIDGE REPAIR PROJECT CONTINUES
Expect lane, shoulder closures
RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) design-build contractor Kokosing Construction Company (KCC), is set to begin construction to replace the bridge superstructure on East Broad Street over Interstate 95 in Richmond starting next month. The project will utilize Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methodologies to reduce onsite construction time safely and cost-effectively. ABC consists of building the new bridge off-site and replacing a section of the old with a newly constructed section of the bridge.
The public may begin to see work by KCC as they start performing various activities ahead of the superstructure replacement. Steel plates within the roadway will be used to protect openings made in the structure during construction. VDOT is working closely with KCC to mitigate pedestrian and motorist impacts and ensure safety during construction.
Motorists should be aware of nightly traffic delays along East Broad Street (Rte. 250) due to single-lane closures. One eastbound and one westbound lane will be open during pre-construction work. Limited bike and pedestrian access will be maintained on the northern sidewalk of the bridge. Pedestrians can access the northern side of Broad Street via crosswalks at the intersections of Broad Street and 14th Street or 17th Street, respectively.
A permanent barrier is currently installed along the outside shoulders of I-95 northbound and southbound in front of the abutments. In addition, a barrier will also be installed on the inside shoulder at the pier in both directions. Motorists can expect to experience nightly single-lane closures on both I-95 northbound and southbound lanes at various times during the evening to prepare for the bridge substructure replacement in early 2024.
The traveling public will notice two staging areas near the bridge along the shoulders of I-95. All construction staging areas along the shoulders are coordinated between the City of Richmond and VDOT to minimize impacts to these locations. All work is being conducted within VDOT right-of-way.
