GILES COUNTY, VIRGINIA – As of May 30, all lanes of Route 460 in Giles County, Virginia, about five miles east of the West Virginia border, are closed again as work continues to repair damage from a mudslide that occurred before Memorial Day.  Both eastbound and both westbound lanes of Route 460 currently are closed.

Nonlocal traffic and commercial vehicles traveling between western Virginia and West Virginia should use Interstate 81 and Interstate 77 as alternate routes.  Local roads in Giles County around the Route 460 closure are not suitable for large truck or heavy traffic volumes.  

All lanes of Route 460 were closed on May 23 following a mudslide that collapsed lanes and damaged a retaining wall. The slide occurred on Route 460 about a mile west of the Town of Narrows. 

On May 28, the Virginia Department of Transportation temporarily opened the eastbound side of Route 460 to two-way traffic while floodwaters receded on Route 649 (Lurich Road), a local detour route.  VDOT has closed all lanes of Route 460 again in the early morning hours of May 30, so workers can continue working on the remaining repairs safely.

Repairs are expected to several more weeks and an exact date for reopening Route 460 has not been determined.  VDOT estimates the repairs will cost approximately $1 million.
