TRAFFIC ALERT: ROUTE 737 (GLADDEN ROAD) IN ROANOKE COUNTY TO BE CLOSED TEMPORARILY FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
Residents should expect delays on August 10 and road closure on August 11

SALEM – On Tuesday, August 11, Route 737 (Gladden Road) in Roanoke County will be closed from 8 a.m. until approximately 8 p.m. while the Virginia Department of Transportation replaces a bridge over a branch of the Roanoke River.

The bridge is located at the intersection of Gladden Road and Route 639 (Harborwood Road). The bridge was built in 1957 and has reached the end of its service life.

Signs are in place to alert citizens of the closure so they can plan accordingly.  Drivers can expect the following impacts to traffic on Monday, August 10 and Tuesday, August 11:

On Monday August 10, flaggers will control traffic on Gladden Road at the bridge from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Drivers should expect possible delays while the bridge crew starts removing parts of the old structure.

On Tuesday, August 11, at 8 a.m., Gladden Road will be closed while the old bridge is removed and replaced with a new structure.  The road is expected to remain closed until approximately 8 p.m.

During the closure, no vehicular traffic will be allowed.  A pedestrian walkway will be installed near the bridge site for foot traffic.

VDOT will provide shuttle service from Green Hill Park to the bridge site.  Residents can park at Green Hill Park and take a shuttle to the bridge to cross the pedestrian walkway.

For questions about the shuttle or to coordinate service, please contact Casey Caldwell at 540-580-5133.

The bridge replacement is weather dependent and will be rescheduled in the event of rain.

VDOT is coordinating with Roanoke County Emergency Services to provide coverage during this closure.
