ROADWAYS GETTING BETTER AS WINTER STORM EXITS THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY

STAUNTON –  (10:15 p.m.) Most of the rain and freezing rain has ended in many parts of the Shenandoah Valley. The winter storm that began this morning left snow ranging from 2.5 inches in Alleghany County to 8 inches in Frederick County.  Most areas saw snow in the 4.5 to 5.5 inch range.  Main roads are wet with temperatures starting to rise above freezing.  Motorists should continue to be alert for icy patches and slushy areas as the snow continues to melt.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews continue to monitor roads and treat as needed.  There are no reports of major flooding but crews will barricade roads that have water over them.

Here are the road conditions as of 10:15 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Minor conditions in Rockbridge County. Clear conditions in Alleghany and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Rockbridge and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Augusta, Rockingham and Shenandoah counties.

Primary roads – Minor conditions in Highland, Bath, Alleghany, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Frederick, Warren, Clarke and Page counties. Clear conditions in Augusta and Shenandoah counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren, Clarke and Page counties. Minor conditions in Bath and Alleghany counties.
