Welcome to the future I-73 Corridor in Virginia

What's New

In December 2012, FHWA issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Henry County Alternative for I-73.

Henry County Alternative Background

The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) passed a resolution in June 2011 to pursue shifting the alignment of Interstate 73 in Henry County from the approved location corridor to the Henry County Alternative. The alignment extends approximately 21 miles from Route 890/108 to Route 87 and would move Interstate 73 to the west, closer to the City of Martinsville.

The CTB's action followed a previous resolution passed on Dec. 17, 2009, directing the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to work with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to conduct the required public involvement and the necessary studies to consider shifting the location of the alignment of I-73 in Henry County.

In spring 2011, VDOT completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) that analyzed an alternative route for the I-73 corridor through Henry County. The EA describes the potential impacts to determine if the changes will result in significant environmental impacts that were not evaluated in the Environmental Impact Statement.  A public hearing on the EA was held in March 2011 and input gathered from the public was provided to the CTB.
