Arterial Management Plans

The Commonwealth’s arterial network is the result of a major investment in public funds- to protect this investment VDOT works cooperatively with localities to develop plans and procedures dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth’s existing transportation investments. Arterial Management Plans use a holistic approach that identifies ways to ensure safety and preserve the capacity of the Commonwealth’s arterial highway network without wide-scale roadway widenings. Arterial Management Plans are a key component of the Arterial Preservation Program- providing localities and VDOT a guide to future development and supporting transportation network infrastructure.

There will always be a need to accommodate new land development along the arterial network- Arterial Management Plans represent a strategic approach, using advanced planning to minimize the safety and congestion impacts that frequently accompany strip development. Arterial Management Plans help guide localities and the development community in their decision-making processes that will ultimately lead to safer access while minimizing congestion, as well as planning and designing the appropriate level of access for the future development in the corridor.
