A project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Thompson Drive and Stanley Street in Abingdon is currently being designed. The project includes removing driveway access from intersection and adding a sidwalk along the west side of the roundabout extending back to Radio Drive and shopping center entrance. The remaining access driveway on the east side of Thompson Drive will be moved to the north to align with the shopping center entrance.
The project is financed using funds through VDOT's SMART SCALE Program, which includes an application and scoring process to evaluate projects statewide based on key factors such as improving safety and contributing to economic development.
Thompson Drive carries approximately 4,800 vehicles per day in this area.
Following the public meeting, the project design will be finalized. The project is anticipated to move to the right of way phase for any needed easements and/or utility relocations in August 2024. Construction is anticipated to begin March 2026.
During construction, motorists can expect flaggers directing traffic in the work zone.
Benefits
The purpose of the project is to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety.
