Please note: 

This project is rehabilitating the South Abingdon Street bridge over I-395 located between the King Street (Route 7, Exit 5) and Shirlington Circle (Exit 6) interchanges. The bridge was built in 1970 and rehabilitated in 1994.

The project includes:

  • Resurfacing the concrete bridge deck and closing deck joints
  • Repairing concrete piers and abutments
  • Adding protective concrete barriers adjacent to piers
  • Extending and adding concrete in-fill walls between piers
  • Replacing bearings and reconstructing bearing seats

The existing sidewalks on both sides of the bridge will remain and the bridge bicycle lanes are being restriped as part of the project.

Estimated Costs
Preliminary Engineering: $900,000
Construction: $7.3 million
Total: $8.2 million

The project is financed with federal and state funding, including State of Good Repair funds used for bridges.

Benefits 

This project will improve safety for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians, and extend the overall life of the bridge.
