Please note: The speed limit along Richmond Highway will be permanently reduced to 35 mph between Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and the Alexandria southern city limits beginning Tuesday, May 23.

About the Study
This study assessed the 45 mph speed limit on about eight miles of Richmond Highway (Route 1) between Belvoir Road/Meade Road and I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) to optimize safety and operations for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers, and transit users.
The final report recommended lowering the speed limit to 35 mph between Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and the Alexandria southern city limits; the reduced speed limit will take effect May 23. Also, the report recommended leaving in place the 45 mph speed limit between Belvoir Road/Meade Road and Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.
Richmond Highway (Route 1) averages about 47,000 vehicles a day within the study limits.
