Virtual Design Public Hearing Route 220 Corridor Intersections

Overview

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) welcomes you to the Virtual Design Public Hearing Page for the Route 220 Corridor Intersection Improvements in Henry, Franklin, the City of Roanoke and Roanoke Counties. Seven intersections along this important corridor will be modified using an innovative intersection design known as a thru-cut which redirects side-street through traffic to turn left or right at the signal and to turn directly into businesses or to use a nearby crossover to make a U-turn. This project will involve a change and/or break in limited access.

Modifying these intersections will increase efficiency and create shorter wait times along the Route 220 corridor by reducing signal phases. With fewer signal phases, more time can be provided to the Route 220 through movements without reducing service to the side-street movements. The resulting improvement in operations is similar to widening Route 220 from four lanes to six lanes, but at a fraction of the cost. Reducing stop and go traffic also enhances safety. Crashes may be reduced by approximately 15-20 percent.

This virtual design public hearing will be held on April 21, 2021 from 5-7 p.m. to provide an opportunity for any person, acting on his/her own behalf or representing a group or governing agency, to give the department comments and/or suggestions on the proposed project.

VDOT strives to ensure that all members of the community have the opportunity to participate in public decisions on transportation projects and VDOT representatives are present to discuss the project and answer your questions.

A public comment period will be held and feedback received on this project will be included in a transcript for review by VDOT personnel, citizens and other interested parties.
