TYSONS – The Virginia Department of Transportation and Fairfax County celebrated a joint effort today to construct a crucial new link for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over I-495 (Capital Beltway) between Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) and Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road/Dolley Madison Boulevard) carries a new ten-foot-wide shared-use path that runs nearly half a mile from Tysons One Place and Fashion Boulevard to Old Meadow Road and Provincial Drive, providing a new link between the Tysons Corner Center mall and Tysons residential areas east of the Beltway.

"This project greatly improves bicyclist and pedestrian accessibility, connectivity, and safety in the Tysons area, and truly exemplifies VDOT's commitment to providing multimodal facilities within the regional transportation network," said John Lynch, P.E., VDOT's Northern Virginia District Engineer.

“With the opening of the Tysons/Old Meadow Road Bridge, we are realizing our vision of a walkable and bikeable Tysons,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff McKay. “This is good for the environment, our residents and local businesses, and greatly enhances the outstanding quality of life we enjoy here in Fairfax County. We greatly appreciate the partnership with the federal and state governments to complete this important connection.”

Construction on the first phase of the Tysons/Old Meadow Road Bike/Ped Improvements project began in August 2021. Last month, the bridge and shared-use path opened to bicyclists and pedestrians. Minor work is occurring in the coming weeks until final completion of the first phase with minimal impacts. The project’s second phase will extend the new shared-use path by half a mile along Old Meadow Road from Provincial Drive to Route 123; final design and construction will occur on the second phase as additional funding becomes available.

The $13.4 million Tysons/Old Meadow Road Bike/Ped Improvements project is financed with federal, state and Fairfax County funds. Shirley Contracting Company, LLC is the construction contractor for the first phase.
