Rolling Road Widening (Phase 2)
Phase 2 of this project will:
- Widen about a mile and a half of Rolling Road (Route 638) from two lanes to four with a raised median, shared-use path and sidewalk between Viola Street and Kenwood Avenue
- Construct a new traffic signal at Rolling Road and Greeley Boulevard
- Upgrade the traffic signal at Rolling Road and Barnack Drive
- Make access management and stormwater improvements
Within the Phase 2 limits, Rolling Road averages about 19,000 vehicles a day.
Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road Intersection Improvements (Phase 1)
Phase 1 (completed in November 2021) of this project:
- Added a second left-turn lane from northbound Rolling Road to westbound Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644)
- Added a dedicated right-turn lane from northbound Rolling Road to eastbound Old Keene Mill Road
- Striped four higher-visibility crosswalks
- Replaced pedestrian signals with ones that are Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and accessible
- Upgraded the traffic signal to accommodate the new turn lanes
- Reconstructed the median along Rolling Road just south of Old Keene Mill Road
At the intersection, Rolling Road averages about 19,000 vehicles a day and Old Keene Mill Road averages about 28,000.
Estimated Costs
Preliminary Engineering: $8.5 million
Phase 1 Right of Way Acquisition and Utility Relocation: $902,000
Phase 2 Right of Way Acquisition and Utility Relocation: $22.4 million
Phase 1 Construction: $3.1 million
Phase 2 Construction: $43.5 million
Total: $78.4 million
Phase 2 is financed with federal, state (including Revenue Sharing), Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and local funding. Phase 1 was financed with state and local Revenue Sharing funding.
Benefits
Phase 2 aims to improve safety, traffic flow and bicyclist/pedestrian mobility and accessibility. Phase 1 aimed to improve safety, traffic flow and pedestrian accessibility.
