It’s almost time for our biggest fall event, Walk to School Day! This year Walk to School Day falls on Wednesday, October 6, and schools, community groups, and families can register a Walk to School Day event on any day in October.
Participating in Walk to School Day and hosting an event is a great way to encourage walking to school, teach safe pedestrian skills, reduce congestion at school arrival and dismissal, and kick off a Safe Routes to School program for the school year. Most importantly, it’s fun for everyone! Be sure to register your event on walkbiketoschool.org and check out the Walk to School Day page for event ideas and resources.

June - Happy Summer!
Summer vacation isn't just the end of the school year - it's the start of a time of great possibilities for enjoying the outdoors and getting some physical activity. Here are a few suggestions for fun things you can do this summer in Virginia:
- Go for a walk! You can take a nature walk and learn about plants, insects, and the world around you. You can also practice mindful walking, a great way to de-stress after a long school year. Or, make a walk extra fun with a scavenger hunt.
- Visit a new trail. Virginia has lots of great places to hike or bike this summer. Our coordinators' favorites include the Belle Isle Pump Track in Richmond, the New River Trail in Galax, Hampton's Buckroe Beach, and the Key-Chain Bridge Loop in Arlington.
- Practice safe bicycling. Whether you're exploring a new place or staying close to home, it's always a great time to practice safe bicycling habits. iCan Bike has helpful tips for selecting the right bike and making sure that your helmet fits properly.
May - Get Ready for Bike to School Day!
Gear up for Bike to School Day on May 5th! Head to walkbiketoschool.org/registration to register your biking event. You're welcome to register an event happening any day during May! Similar to last year, you can register a family, neighborhood, or school event. No matter how you choose to do it, your school benefits. If it's the first time your school is participating, we’ll send your school an awesome, one-of-a-kind 2021 Bike to School Day decal.
Bicycling improves our energy levels, keeps our body healthy, and reduces stress. Let's have a happy BTSD this year - and don't forget to wear a mask over your smile. These are interesting and often challenging times, which is why this year’s Bike to School Day motto is so perfect: Let’s roll with it!
March 5 - Celebrate Your Favorite Walking and Biking Champion with New SRTS Super Star Materials
The 2020-2021 school year has been quite different from previous ones, but no matter if students are attending school in-person or virtually, there are many committed people going above and beyond to encourage families to walk and bike.
Who's been championing walking and biking in your community? Is it a teacher, or perhaps one of your neighbors? Check out the resources on the Marketing Toolkit page and thank them for their efforts (or give yourself or your family members a little pat on the back for staying active!)
February 19 - Are You Involved in SRTS in Virginia? We Want to Hear from You!
We want to hear your thoughts on Virginia SRTS! Your feedback will provide helpful information in developing the Strategic Plan update. Tell us about your local program and your experience with statewide events, grant opportunities, and program resources. The survey will be open until March 19, 2021.

December 18 - Get Ready for Crossing Guard Appreciation Day!
Many of us have missed seeing our beloved crossing guards every day, and that's all the more reason to celebrate Crossing Guard Appreciation Day next February. The official day is on February 10, but celebrate on the day that works best for your community. Crossing guards do much more than simply help students to cross the street. They help to create a walking and biking culture that is safe and fun. Students are able to get more physical activity, socialize with their friends, feel a sense of independence, and spend time outside in their community.
Thank your crossing guard for their outstanding service with a thank you card, or say a socially-distanced "Thank you!" in person if your crossing guard is working. Contrary to past years, there will not be a state-wide Most Outstanding Crossing Guard award in 2021. This year, all crossing guards are the most outstanding!
December 1 - Thank you for participating in the 2020 Parent and Caregiver Survey!
The results of the Fall 2020 Parent and Caregiver Survey are in! We received over 3,100 responses from parents and caregivers across Virginia. Thanks to all who participated, including our 10 cash card winners! The survey results show an overall decrease in physical activity during the pandemic, but an increase in bicycling. They also suggest that many parents would support their children walking and bicycling to school if certain changes could be made. Interested in seeing the full summary report? Click here.
Oct 21 - Parents, Take Our Survey!
If you're a parent or caregiver in Virginia, we want to hear from you! Click here to take our Fall 2020 Parent and Caregiver Survey. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and will help us understand how the pandemic has influenced walking and bicycling.
If you fill out the survey between now and October 31, you could win a $25 cash card! To be eligible, parents and caregivers must provide an email address where they can be contacted. Ten winners will be selected in a drawing. Thank you for your participation!

Oct 7 - Walk to School Day, Any Way You Can
Safe Routes to School's signature fall event is back on October 7, 2020. Given the pandemic, we are encouraging communities to participate in whatever fashion that encourages physical activity safely. Celebrate at home, around the neighborhood, or at school! To encourage participation from different learning environments, neighborhoods, families, and school can register their event on walkbiketoschool.org. Registration is quick and easy, and any school that registers their event will receive a Walk to School decal in December. Find out more information, student incentives, and other resources on our WTSD webpage. Happy walking!
July 26 - 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the first comprehensive civil rights law in the United States that prohibits discrimination based on disability. We celebrate the ADA for removing barriers that limit people with different abilities from participating in public life. In the past 30 years, state and local governments dramatically changed our transportation systems to accommodate all abilities.
Safe Routes to School has also adopted inclusive values to consider students of all abilities when planning programs or events. We look forward to continuing to champion the ADA and accessibility for all students.

May - Bike to School Day Recap
This year’s Bike to School Day was the first that we’ve celebrated from our own homes. But some things never change; families across Virginia enjoyed the benefits of active mobility as they pedaled around. Schools championed Bike to School Day as an opportunity to ride together, apart! Many students biked to their school and looked forward to biking to school together once again. While Bike to School Day may have passed, every day can be celebrated as a chance to enjoy biking and to remind Virginia’s leaders of the importance of safe walking and biking facilities.
Kilmer Middle School, Vienna
March 23 - No Bike to School Day in 2020
Following the guidance of Governor Ralph Northam and the National Center for Safe Routes to School, Virginia will not celebrate Bike to School Day (BTSD) this year. BTSD has always been about community, safety, and health. This is time to focus on health in a different way.
While biking as a large group is unsafe, we encourage individual families to walk and bike as possible. See our Bike to School Day page for information on walking and bicycling while social distancing and staying safe during this time.
March 16 - NEW Non-Infrastructure Grant Deadline is April 3
Given the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, VDOT recognizes the need to be flexible. The deadline to submit all Non-Infrastructure Grant applications is now 11:59 PM on April 3. Applicants are allowed to submit without the necessary signatures. VDOT will evaluate the applications with the assumption that signatures will be obtained. Signatures must be obtained the time VDOT offers the grant, which is now scheduled for May 13th and final contract signatures must be obtained in July.
Best wishes from VDOT and your LTACs. Stay safe and stay healthy.

December 1 - Nominate Your Most Outstanding Crossing Guard
Crossing guards help students cross the street safely throughout the year in all weather conditions. We want to hear about crossing guards who go above and beyond to make the journey to school efficient, safe, and enjoyable. Nominations for Virginia's Most Outstanding Crossing Guard are open between December 1 - January 24. The nomination form and last year's winners can be found on the Crossing Guard Appreciation Day page.
November 22 - Complete Student Travel Tally Data Entry
Every September and October, schools throughout Virginia are encouraged to take Student Travel Tallies in September and October. Student Travel Tallies are quick, in-class surveys that provide valuable information on student travel patterns. Collecting tallies on an annual basis is a great way to track the impact of your SRTS program.
While the data collection period has ended, there's still time to input the data on saferoutesdata.org -- we're extending the due date one week until November 22. To be eligible to receive banners (first-time schools) and decals (all participating schools), all data must be entered by this date. Instructions are available on the Student Travel Tally Week webpage.
October 31 – Our Best Walk to School Day Yet!
This year's Walk to School Day was a huge success! We are very excited to announce that 386 schools held registered Walk to School Day events this October. That's 22 more schools than last year's record! Thank you to all students, teachers, staff, crossing guards, parents, and other supporters who made this event possible. All registered schools will receive a Walk to School Day Decal in early December.
September 16 - Take Student Travel Tallies in September or October!
A Student Travel Tally is a quick, in-class survey that provides valuable information on student travel patterns. To participate in Student Travel Tally Week, conduct a Student Travel Tally at your school in September or October using paper forms or online links and enter the data on the Safe Routes to School Data Collection System (saferoutesdata.org) by November 15. Schools that participate for the first time will receive a Virginia SRTS banner to display, and all participating schools will receive a Student Travel Tally Week decal for 2019. For more information, click here.
September 12 – Register and plan your Walk to School Day Event
The first day of school has come and gone - which means we're only a month away from Walk to School Day, Safe Routes to School's signature fall event! This year Walk to School Day falls on Wednesday, October 2, but we encourage schools to hold one or more walking events throughout the month of October as their schedules allow.
Last year, 364 schools across Virginia held walking events during Walk to School Month. So far, we have 24 schools registered for 2019. We're trying to reach an unprecedented 400 events, and we need your help! Please remember to register your school's event at walkbiketoschool.org so it can be part of the buzz leading up to and after the event. Registration is simple, only takes a few minutes, and you'll get a Walk to School Day decal for your school in early December.

June 28 - Our Best Bike to School Day Yet!
A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in Bike to School Day this year. We're very excited and extremely proud to report that at the end of the month, there were 313 registered events across the Commonwealth, well exceeding our statewide goal of 300! This made us in 2nd place nationwide for the 2nd year in a row behind California. We hope that Virginia schools will use this momentum to start planning for Walk to School Day on October 2. Visit the Walk to School Day page for resources and more information.
May 17 - We're nearly there! Help us beat last year's Bike to School Day record
Virginia currently has 284 registered Bike to School Day events on www.walkbiketoschool.org, which means we're just shy of last year's 286 events and a bit further from our 2019 goal of 300 events.
Schools can register any biking related events through the end of the month, and all participating schools will receive a Bike to School Day decal for their participation. More information, event ideas, and sticker templates are available on the Bike to School Day page.
March 6 - Register your school for Bike to School Day 2019
Let the countdown to SRTS' signature spring event begin! Bike to School Day, which takes place on Wednesday, May 8 this year, is only two months away. That's still plenty of time to plan an event; we even have resources to help you plan one in as little as 7 days. Check out the Bike to School Day webpage for more.
Last year, 286 Virginia schools registered for Bike to School Day and reaped the benefits of increased physical activity, more time to socialize with friends and family, and arriving at school focused and ready to learn. Can you help us expand the reach of Bike to School Day to 300 schools this year? Be sure to register your event on walkbiketoschool.org to join the movement and be counted towards our goal.

The online application will open for submissions on February 11, and must be completed by March 22. October 31 – We Made Our Goal for WTSD 2017!
It was another record-breaking year for Walk to School Day in Virginia. At the beginning of the school year, we set the ambitious goal of having 325 schools register their events on the national walkbiketoschool.org site. Registration closed on October 31, and Virginia had a total of 328 registered schools; 17 more schools than participated in 2016.
As you can see by the graph above, Virginia has come a long way since 2004, when the first Walk to School Day events were held. In the past decade alone, the number of participating schools has grown almost ten-fold. A big thank you to everyone who helped plan and participated in events; keep up the great work!
September 18 - SRTS Event Participation All Stars
Take a quick break from your Walk to School Day and Student Travel Tally Week preparations and join us in congratulating last year’s top participating schools. The ‘Hall of Fame’ schools lead their regions with the most all-time SRTS event participation and the ‘All Star’ schools participated in the most events during the 2016-2017 school year.
Would you like to see your school on the list next year? Be sure to participate in all four statewide and national SRTS events this year: Walk to School Day on October 4, Student Travel Tally Week in September or October, Crossing Guard Appreciation Day next February 14, and Bike to School Day next May 9. Learn more about each event by clicking the links above.
August 15 - Walk to School Day Registration Open!
It’s time to register for International Walk to School Day! On October 4, students, families, school leaders, community partners, and elected officials in Virginia and around the country will celebrate the benefits of walking to school.
The Walk to School Day movement grows every year. Last year, there were a record-setting 5,086 schools that participated nationwide - 311 of them in Virginia. These schools and their communities used the day to build visibility for both the benefits of walking and any needed safety improvements.
Register your school to help us reach our goal of 325 events in 2017 and earn a Walk to School Day decal. While the official day is October 4, Virginia schools can host a Walk to School event any day in October and be counted. Also, be sure to visit the Walk to School Day page for event ideas and free resources.
August 10 - Fall Due Date for Walkabout Mini-grant Applications
Want to learn more about the walking and bicycling conditions in the area around your school? Then apply for a Walkabout Mini-grant by September 28, 2017. Walkabout Mini-grant recipients receive a hands-on walking and bicycling infrastructure survey and written Walkabout Report coordinated by the Local Technical Assistance Coordinator serving their region.
Visit the Walkabout Mini-grants page to learn more and complete the online application.
June 30 - Transportation Alternatives Set Aside Workshops
The Transportation Alternatives (TA) Set Aside is the federal funding source for "alternative" transportation projects, such as those that benefit walking and biking to school. New sidewalks, installing high-visibility crosswalks, and building connections to off-street trails, are examples of projects funded through TA.
TA is administered by VDOT's Local Assistance Division. Please note: This application cycle will include awards for both FY19 and FY20 allocations. If the November 2017 deadline is missed, the next opportunity to apply for Federal TA funds will be November 2019. The Local Assistance Division is hosting free workshops for interested applicants at four different locations throughout the state.
- Wytheville - July 19
- Smithfield - July 26
- Lynchburg - August 3
- Culpeper - August 17
All workshops start at 10:00 AM. Visit the Local Assistance Division website to register for a workshop, get directions and learn more about TA by downloading the Transportation Alternatives Guide.
June 26 - 2017-2018 Non-Infrastructure Grants Awardees Announced
The Virginia Department of Transportation is pleased to announce the fifth round of Non-Infrastructure Grant award winners. Non-Infrastructure Grant awardees use a portion of their funds to hire a local coordinator to work with the schools on SRTS activities. Once again, there are many returning awardees, meaning divisions will be able to maintain their momentum with walking and biking curricula, events, and other programming. Congratulations to all!

Also happening in 2017, the National Center for Safe Routes to School is teaming up with Schwinn for the fourth year in a row to host the Schwinn Bike to School Day Bike Share Giveaway. Ten lucky schools that register their Bike to School Day events will be selected to win 10 Schwinn SmartStart bikes and 20 Schwinn helmets; drawings begin on April 19.
All Virginia schools that register on their events on www.walkbiketoschool.org will receive a Bike to School Day decal designed to be displayed on a Virginia Safe Routes to School banner. Wondering how to get a banner for your school? Schools can earn one by participating in Student Travel Tally Week in the fall.
February 21 - Non-Infrastructure Grants
VDOT is pleased to announce another round of Non-Infrastructure Grants for the 2017-2018 school year! The success of Virginia's SRTS program is due in large part to the dedicated local coordinators funded by the Non-Infrastructure Grants. The program began with 10 coordinators for the 2013-2014 school year and has grown to 17 coordinators working in 16 jurisdictions throughout the Commonwealth.
As in years past, a VDOT-approved Activities and Programs Plan (APP) is required for the application, and school divisions that have received full funding for at least three years will be required to include a 20 percent local match as part of their grant budget for the year. Program staff will again be available to review your draft APP prior to your official submission to ensure that it meets the program requirements.
Once the APP is completed, applicants should submit it (as a PDF) via the online grant management system. The online application will open for submissions on March 17, and must be completed by 12:00 PM, April 17. For more information about grant application, optional review of the APP, funding limits, eligible activities and other pertinent details, please consult the Virginia SRTS Program Guidelines on the Non-Infrastructure Grants page.

November 6 - Be Safe, Be Seen
While the extra hour gained when clocks "fall back" on November 6 is nice, Daylight's Savings Time means most school travel occurs outside of daylight hours. With the time change and colder temperatures outside, it's important to discuss how to stay safe when walking or biking during the winter months. Check out these tips from our friends at Walk Arlington:
- Be safe and be seen. Follow basic safety rules, like looking both ways before you cross a street, crossing at marked crosswalks, watching for traffic, paying attention to cyclists, and walking to the right on trails and paths. Assume drivers can’t see you and proceed with caution, especially when days are short and weather conditions unfavorable.
- Share the way. Be mindful of cyclists, runners, and other trail users. Walk on the right, and listen for bells and audible warnings. Watch for icy spots!
- Walk with friends or in places where there are other walkers, especially in the early morning and evening hours.
- Mind over matter. Suppress the cold-weather hibernation instinct by thinking “brisk” and “invigorating” instead of colder thoughts.
- Cover your head and other parts to stay warm. Dress in layers, and don’t forget the mittens or gloves and hat — you lose 35 percent of your body heat through your head!
- Pay extra attention to your feet. Wear warm socks with room for toe wiggling. Lace up walking shoes with plenty of traction for those occasional icy patches.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing and stay visible. With fewer daylight hours and cloudy conditions, it’s important to don a high-visibility outer layer.
- Consider the conditions when planning your route. Walk where trees offer some shelter from the wind.
- Start slowly and take it easy. Muscles warm up as you go. Adjust your pace for the weather conditions to decrease your chances of straining a muscle or taking a fall.
October 31 - 300 Virginia schools take part in Walk to School Day!
Virginia had another year of record breaking participation in Walk to School Day, with 300 schools registering events on www.walkbiketoschool.org.
Sixteen schools participated in their first Walk to School Day events, and several school divisions had 100% participation. Thank you to everyone who took part in these events for helping us reach our ambitious goal for the year.
August 29 – New Zone In, Not Out Resources Available
The VA SRTS Program has released three new resources to support its Zone In, Not Out School Zone Safety Campaign. The new resources include a guide on Speed Reduction in the Zone, a Safe Driver Pledge Kit and templates for Zone In, Not Out branded Yard Signs.

Are you using these materials at your school? Please send us photos at Info@VirginiaSRTS.org for a chance to be featured in a future newsletter!
August 15 – Get Ready for Student Travel Tally Week in September and October
Student Travel Tallies are quick, in-class surveys that provide valuable information on student travel patterns and can help you monitor the success of your SRTS program over time. The Virginia SRTS program promotes Student Travel Tallies every year during September and October. To encourage broad participation across the state, schools that participate for the first time will receive a Safe Routes to School Banner and a decal to decorate the banner. Repeat participants will receive an STTW participation decal to decorate their SRTS Banner. Visit the Student Travel Tally Week page for more information and classroom resources.
August 10 – Register for the 20th Walk to School Day Celebration

To see last year’s results and learn more about Student Travel Tallies, visit the STTW webpage or contact your LTAC.
October 23 – Be Safe, Be Seen
With Halloween approaching and daylight hours getting shorter, it’s important to discuss how to stay safe when walking or biking after dark. Pedestrians and bicyclists should avoid dark colors and wear clothing and accessories made from reflective materials. Bicyclists are required by state law to have a white headlights and red taillights when traveling between dusk and dawn.
For Halloween, expect more children and parents walking in your neighborhood, and follow these tips from Safe Kids:
- Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Since masks can sometimes obstruct a child’s vision, try non-toxic face paint and makeup whenever possible.
- Have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
- Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
- Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
- When selecting a costume make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

October 7, 2015: International Walk to School Day (iWalk)
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration with record breaking participation each October.
In 2014, 220 Virginia schools participated. Let’s see if we can hit 250 in 2015! Visit our Walk to School Day webpage for more information, and be sure to register your event on www.walkbiketoschool.org to be a part of the international celebration. Remember - October is Walk to School Month, so schools can host an event any day in the month.
September 8 - October 30, 2015: Participate in Virginia Student Travel Tally Week (STTW)
Schools across Virginia are encouraged to conduct Student Travel Tallies in classrooms during one week of their choosing in either September or October. To encourage participation, schools conducting tallies for the first time this fall will receive a SRTS banner to hang in their school. Just survey at least 80% of your classrooms and upload the data to www.saferoutesdata.org, the National Center for Safe Routes to School’s online data clearinghouse. Schools participating for a second or third time will receive STTW decals to decorate their banners. Supporting materials including principal and parent letters, flyers and tally forms are available on our Student Travel Tally Week webpage.
August 3 – Fall 2015 Walkabout Mini-grant Information
The Virginia SRTS Program is pleased to offer another round of Walkabout Mini-grants this fall. The recipients of a Walkabout Mini-grant will work with the Local Technical Assistance Coordinator (LTAC) serving their region to conduct an assessment of the walking and bicycling conditions around their school. The LTAC will also prepare a report documenting the existing conditions and the recommendations that emerge from the Walkabout. The Walkabout Report should be used to support specific infrastructure grant applications.
To learn more and apply for a Walkabout, please visit the Student Travel Plans & Grants page. The applications for the Walkabout Mini-grants are due on October 8.
August 1 – Student Travel Tally Week dates announced
This year, Student Travel Tally Week (STTW) is any week in September or October that works best for your school. The only exception is that Student Travel Tallies should not be taken the same week as a Walk to School Day event. Student travel tallies are an important evaluation tool to measure the success of a SRTS program, and the data is often requested in grant applications.
To encourage broad participation across the state, first time participants in Student Travel Tally Week will receive a Safe Routes to School Banner. Repeat participants will receive an STTW participation decal to decorate their SRTS Banner. Visit the Student Travel Tally Week webpage to download the STTW Toolkit with everything you need to conduct tallies at your school.

Call for SRTS Grant Applications, More Resources for Local SRTS Programs
September 10, 2012 -- The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School Program has issued a call for grant applications for both infrastructure projects and non-infrastructure projects. This is the first time since 2010 that VDOT SRTS Program is accepting applications for non-infrastructure projects and represents another outcome of the Program’s Strategic Plan completed earlier in 2012. More information on the grant application and new, user-friendly travel plan information are available on the School Travel Plans and Grants section.
VDOT is also offering resources for local SRTS programs with four new programs:
Three local technical assistance coordinators (LTACs) are now available to assist local SRTS programs. Each LTAC is assigned to work in one of three state regions. Their work will involve both direct contacts (telephone, email, in-person) with local communities and VDOT District Offices, and on broader activities that support SRTS statewide and locally. For contact information and to find out which LTAC serves your community, visit the Contact Us section.
A new online Starter Kit is now available to assist local programs just getting underway. The Kit includes information on forming a SRTS team, planning a walk and bike to school event, and talking points to use for community SRTS presentations. See the Starter Kit section for more information.
VDOT has also created an acknowledgement program to recognize those that contribute to local safe routes to school programs. See the Acknowledgement Program section for more information.
On August 24, VDOT announced a SRTS QuickStart Mini-grant program, Student Travel Tally Week (a statewide count of student travel-to-school modes) and a reminder about the October 3 Walk to School Day. This announcement and others are in our announcement archives for easy access.
August 23, 2012 -- The Virginia SRTS program is pleased to announce the first in a series of changes designed to encourage more communities to start and maintain a safe routes to school program.
