The Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) pipeline programs are designed to attract, retain and continuously grow our workforce.

Our pipeline programs enable VDOT to hire, develop and prepare entry-level professionals to assume key roles and cultivate skills and interest in transportation.

Participants receive cross-training and are assigned technical mentors to encourage agency acumen, knowledge sharing and professional development.

Use the links below for information and program documents for each of the pipeline programs.

The Civil Engineering Scholarship Program  at VDOT offers civil engineering students the opportunity to:

  • Gain valuable, real-world work experience
  • Earn money over the summer
  • Receive fall and spring semester stipends to assist with educational expenses

Upon graduation, scholars transition into the Engineering Development and Growth Experience (EDGE) Program, a full-time, two-year position with varied work assignments.

The objective of the Civil Engineer Scholar and EDGE programs is to identify qualified candidates and place them into critical engineering roles across VDOT.

The mission of the EDGE Program is to develop recent engineer graduates as VDOT professionals and future leaders.

EDGE associates complete a two-year rotation program with meaningful on-the-job learning experiences, targeted training and engaged coaches and mentors to foster the development of mission-critical technical skills and leadership.

In the first year, associates gain a broad agency perspective by rotating through 13 technical areas.

In the second year, associates are placed in a district or Central Office team aligned with their selected specialization.

After program completion, associates take on critical engineering roles across VDOT.

The Internship Program focuses on introducing students to the importance of public service while addressing the critical and future business needs of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

Internships, which primarily are in the summer months, give students real work experience in business, engineering, environmental and other functional areas of VDOT.

Learning is focused on technical and self-leadership skills needed for the individual, and potentially, for VDOT.

Depending on business need and performance, interns may have the opportunity to extend their internships into the academic year.  We are particularly interested if you are pursuing a degree in one of the following areas:

  • Environmental science
  • Accounting or finance
  • Business administration
  • Public administration
  • Engineering
  • Chemistry or geology
  • Information technology
  • Communications
